Iran Explores New Transit Railway Route to China via Afghanistan

A senior official from Iran’s railway administration has announced that Tehran is considering the possibility of establishing a new transit railway route to China through Afghanistan. This plan could connect Iran to East Asia via Afghan territory.
According to Iranian media reports, the project involves extending the railway from Herat province to Balkh, then continuing towards Badakhshan province and the Wakhan Corridor. This route brings Afghanistan closer to the Chinese border and holds significant geographical transit importance.
If realized, the project would link Iran to China through Afghanistan’s rail network and potentially strengthen Afghanistan’s position as a transit hub in the region.
However, concerns about infrastructure conditions, security challenges, and the lack of a clear cooperative framework between the Taliban administration and neighboring countries are considered factors that cast uncertainty over the practical future of such large regional projects.
